Dear All
After recently attending the wonderful Nepenthes lectures at the Bonn cp
meeting and hearing about the many problems facing cp habitats in SE Asia,
I thought I'd pass on this request for info. I'd appreciate copies of any
info/data you forward so that I can keep it on record in case of future
inquiries. Thanks:

Re: WWF Indonesia Program Bio-Regional Planning Project\Kalimantan
Biodiversity Assessment
I am writing to ask if the specialist group could offer some guidance on
carnivorous plant conservation priorities in Kalimantan, Indonesia.
WWF has commenced a new bio-regional planning project in Kalimantan which
is expected to focus initially on the province of East Kalimantan. I am
involved in various aspects of this project as part of my Phd research.
This project has been initiated in response to various factors, which=
include:
=B7 the realisation that, while conservation efforts directed toward
communities living in and around protected areas are necessary, these need
to be complimented by initiatives to counter large scale threats stemming
from government or private sector sponsored development activities; =20
=B7 that successful biodiversity conservation strategies need to embrace the
non-reserve matrix;
=B7 and, approaching biodiversity conservation at the landscape scale may
facilitate a better understanding of a) the linkages between cultural
history, development and the distribution and status of habitats and
species; and b) critical large scale ecological flows and linkages (a
systems approach).

The spatial planning process at the provincial and district levels in
Indonesia is currently being strengthened in accordance with the
government=92s decentralisation policies. The WWF Bio-regional planning
project is conceived with aim of ensuring that biodiversity consideration
are integrated with regional development planning.
As part of this process we are checking that WWF-IP has an up-to-date
overview of global and national biodiversity conservation priorities in
Kalimantan. The various priority setting studies using taxonomic =91hotspot=
=92
or =91representativeness=92 are immensely valuable in this respect, but I am
aware that these approaches have limitations when it comes to the
conservation of specific taxa and it is for this reason that I am
contacting you.
I am hoping that the specialist group can provide me with information in
the following areas:
1. Locations - areas and/or habitats in Kalimantan of the highest
importance for the conservation of key species.
2. Whether genetic variation can be conserved within the existing
protected areas (several of which are very large) or whether conservation
strategies need to consider the wider landscape matrix, for example through
the maintenance of corridors or low-intensity agricultural land uses.
3. Processes of the wider ecological system which may be important for xxx
conservation .
I realise that these are potentially large questions and I do not expect a
detailed response. A simple map marking important areas, notes on possible
ecological linkages, or suggestions on information sources would all be
most useful.
I would be grateful if you could forward this email to the those within the
specialist group with knowledge of Kalimantan or, alternatively if you
could provide me with their contact details so I can contact them directly.=

With many thanks in anticipation of your help.
Yours sincerely,
Paul Jepson
