Subject: Re: Byblis gigantea

Hi All,
Regarding the topic about Byblis gigantea, I acquired several plants
 from Brian
Cochran (thanks Brian)about a year ago. I use mostly course silica
sand, perlite and a little peat moss to retain some moisture. I find
the bigger the pot, the better these plants seem to do. All Byblis
plants receive full "hot" sun all day long with limited watering every
other day or so. They seem to respond quit well to these conditions and
do quit well on their own catching bugs. I label these plants as
forgiving plants. If you forget to water them for a few days, they
don't seem to mind. We think of CPs as always needing lots of fresh,
pure water, but Byblis seem to be just the opposite. They seem to react
negatively to, to much watering unless the soil is pores enough to allow
water to pass through it. With this in mind, I would not recommend
sitting these plants in a container of water unless you keep a very
close eye on.
In the winter, I just let the pots go almost dry and forget about the
 plants
until spring. They spend most of the winter inside a cool greenhouse
sitting on a dry bench. I may, on occasions, check the dryness and add
a little water to their soil, but be extremely careful watering them
when growing season is over. They will surely die. Hope this helps.
