Subject: Red _Sphagnum_

Hello Steven Stewart here,
I believe the red _Sphagnum_ you all have is the "male" of this
diocious genera. I'm not sure where I read about it, but I believe it
was H.C. Bold or Professor Goebel mentions the acute leaved spp. vs.
the spoon-leaved _Sphagnum_ spp. "males" often form red tufts in winter.
I have never seen any red _Sphagnum_ spp. with sporophytes, although
many different species in my collection are now red. The tufts that have
sporophytes are all green. Has anyone on the list ever seen red
_Sphagnum_ moss form sporophytes?
Take care,
Steven Stewart,
