As you have already said, spraying is not going to be successful, nor
are any biological solutions. A few dozen preying mantids would take a
few grasshoppers each but there is a limit to how many each mantid will
eat.

Probably the only feasible solution is to cover the plants in some sort
of netting to keep the grasshoppers out. You could probably get away
with something fairly temporary with a mesh size sufficient to exclude
the pests.
