Oh, yes, the vft will take dead insects. You'll have to trigger the trap,
but the key is, after the trap has closed, you will need to gently squeeze
the trap a few times with your fingers. This is supposed to simulate a
struggling insect, otherwise, the stimulus for digestion doesn't occur,
and the trap will reopen.

Becareful about the size of the insect. If it is too large, most likely
the trap will rot during the digestion period.
